What does the term 'Distribution' mean?
Distribution means to spread the product throughout the marketplace such that a large number of people can buy it.
How do you construct a transect?
Why is it important to study natural fluctuations in populations?
Populations rarely grow smoothly up to the carrying capacity and then remain there. Instead, fluctuations in population numbers, abundance, or density from one time step to the next are the norm. Population cycles make up a special type of population fluctuation, and the growth curves in population cycles are marked by distinct amplitudes and periods that set them apart from other population fluctuations. In a few species, such as Artic Foxes and Lynx animals, populations show regular cycles of increase and decrease spanning a number of years. The causes of these fluctuations are still under debate by population ecologists, and no single cause may provide an explanation for every species. Most major hypotheses link regular fluctuations in population size to factors that are dependent on the density of the population, such as the availability of food or the activities of specialized predators, whose numbers track the abundance of their prey through population highs and lows. It is important to know these statistics so we can track and monitor populations to protect animals from becoming endangered and many more reasons.
Which species of wombat is critically endangered? Describe its distribution.
The northern hairy-nosed wombat is one of three species of wombats. It is one of the rarest large mammals in the world and is critically endangered. Their range used to include northern Victoria, New South Wales, and about a quarter of Queensland. Its range is restricted to about 750 acres of the Epping Forest in east-central Queensland. While this area has been protected as a National Park, the native grasses that the Northern hairy nosed wombat eats are being overtaken by
non-indigenous grasses such as buffel grass.

Factors that might cause fluctuations of vegetation in an area and how this might affect the animals that feed on the vegetation. |
Steady rainfall and/or soil changes can impact on the quality of fertile land. New plants could begin to grow or some plants could grow faster. Animals who feed on these vegitations can be affected as new plants could attract new consumers who also eat their food, or they could benefit by having more food.

Why is it important to know the distribution of endangered species?
We must know where our endangered species are distributed so we can understand and protect them. If we knew of a certain environment that many endangered species were taking residence, we could ensure they had enough food and water there for their survival aswell as remove certain predators from the environment.
Tim Flannery is an Australian scientist who has been outspoken about the need to
control population growth in Australia. These are some of the arguments he put foward to support his view.
- One of the most effective measures we can take to combat climate change is to sharply reduce the number of humans on the planet
- Australia is 'full
- Women should be able to have the ability to control their own fertility
- Australia should have a population policy because we have an increasing population. A lot of developed countries don't. But we have an increasing population and a very unusual ecology
- Really because the ecology of Australia is so different and so unique. Land size really has very little to do with the number of people you can support on it.
-Australian soils are 70% degradable
- The population should be somewhere between six and 12 million.
- We should control immigration levels because that is what's contributing to the major population growth at the moment

Most populated countries in the world.
As the human population continues to grow, natural environments are being
destroyed to make way for housing, farmland and roads. In an attempt to meet the needs of humans we can inflict irreversible damage on our environment. It does not have to be this way. With careful planning and creative thinking it is possible for humans to live more
sustainably.
Why is clear cutting less sustainable than thinning when harvesting timber.
First of all, clearcutting is the felling and removal of all trees from a given area of forest Clearcutting can destroy an area's ecological integrity in a number of ways including, the destruction of buffer zones which reduce the severity of flooding by absorbing and holding water and the elimination of fish and wildlife species due to soil erorion and habitat loss. Whilts, Thinning is the cutting down and removal of a proportion of trees in a forest crop. It is carried out primarily to provide more growing space for the remaining trees, which leads to an increase in volume of individual trees. Thinning also provides the farmer with an intermediate source
of timber revenue bfore the final crop is cut down at the end of the rotation. This is why it is more substantial to thin rather thaen clear cut when harvesting.Products such as paper or floor boards are sometimes labelled as being made from plantation wood.
Why might this be important to environmentally aware consumers?
Plantation wood is also called 'fast wood'. The reason why consumers perfer this wood is because it grows back quickly unlike other woods. Environmentaly, cuttiung down trees causes many problems, such as creating less oxygen. Fast growing trees becaome again very quickly so as people need to cut down less trees that take time to grow back to its full size.
Sometimes when forests are cleared wildlife corridors are preserved. These allow animals to travel from one area of bushland to another.
Explain why this might be important.
If an animals natural habitat were destroyed, it would finds itself without shelter or food. This could lead to the deterioration of a certain animal and kill many others in the same area. As trees are cut down animals are revealed to hunters for the killing. Allowing animals safe-passage with allow them to survive.
Discuss the following statement: ‘The council should charge waste disposal rates for each household per kg of waste they produce’.
If this law progressed, garbage disposers would have to weigh the rubbish before they removed it. This would be far more time consuming time consuming than the usual method of waste disposal. It would also cost the government more money to send out the bills for this payment. These bills would be sent on paper, which would make larger demands for tree cutting and paper. Also the postman would have to deliever more mail across more land wasteing more petrol. The idea of charging for waste disposal is obsurd. Also, people who could not pay the bills would not put their rubbish out and turn to alternative methods to be rid of it. This could include the burning of waste releasing gase in the air that could be harmful for the environment.
Create a list of strategies that may help cut down the amount of rubbish sent to the tip by DTHS.
- There should be recycleing bins as well as bottle bins next to the usual waste bins.
- We should use recycable packages in cooking classes.
- There should be a compost bin
- More places to dispose of rubbish properly
- Classes can re-use printed sheets.
- We should donate objects we no longer need to charities
List possible water-saving suggestions for DTHS.
- Bathroom taps should have a timer.
- People should be encouraged to bring a bottle of water to school
- There should be les bubblers
- Use less water in the agricultural area/ have environmentally friendly sprinkelers
- Have leaners use other products than water.
